Coming up on Global Village this week...
How should the media report on mental health?
Since its inception Global Village has been presented by Dil Wickremasinghe who has one vision - living in an inclusive and equal Ireland. Her work as a Broadcaster, Journalist, Stand up Comedian, Social Entrepreneur and Equality and Personal Development trainer is geared towards this vision. Dil is also Mental Health Ambassador to both One in Four and See Change.
Dil was born in Italy and is a Sri Lankan national and moved to Ireland 12 years ago and is now an Irish citizen.
Dil launched her new website www.dilw.ie on International Women’s Day, 8th March 2013.
The site will showcase Dil’s work as a Social Justice and Mental Health Broadcaster and inspire you to act now and be part of the change.
Global Village is a groundbreaking show which is now in its fourth broadcasting year, airing live to a national audience every Saturday evening 7-9pm. Global Village brings its listeners to the core of the latest social justice stories by hearing from those who are affected by the issues. In doing so we hope to raise awareness and to inspire our listeners to act and be part of the change! Global Village aims to spark social change through thought-provoking discussion of integration, equality, inclusion and social justice stories.

The Feel Good Slot supported by See Change (Weekly)
See Change: changing minds about the stigma of mental health problems, one conversation at a time...
We have all kinds of conversations on air. That's what we do in radio. But one of the most important conversations you can have, is also one of the hardest to have. And that conversation is about our mental health...Every fortnight, Dil is joined on Global Village by Caroline McGuigan, our resident psychotherapist, and Founder and CEO of SOS. But with the new year comes change, and we are delighted to announce that from now on, our Feel Good slot will be weekly! Caroline will still be with us every second week, and we will also feature a wide array of experts and contributors, who will be talking nutrition, creativity, exercise, gardening…basically everything that makes us feel good and improves our mental health.
So welcome to Feel Good on Global Village. Listen in from 8pm!
Every two weeks we are joined by resident psychotherapist Caroline McGuigan to shed light on the area of mental health, to combat stigma and to offer advice to our listeners that are experiencing difficulties. Caroline’s warm, no-nonsense, personal approach and personality work well in this interactive slot. Caroline has personal experience of attempting suicide and the limited services available. She spent 8 years as a user of the psychiatric services, leaving her with an in-depth knowledge of the medical model, how and why a person is diagnosed and the treatment they may receive in Ireland. She received a Social Entrepreneurs Ireland Level 1 Award in 2006, and a Level 2 Award in 2007. In this slot we cover a wide variety of subjects including body image, addiction, depression, anxiety and often feature guest panellists from advocacy groups i.e. One In Four, Shine, See Change and Bodywhys.
We don’t often hear the words business and ethics uttered in the same sentence but our ethical marketer believes that doing good is good for business! With over 20 years marketing and communications experience, Sheena has been specializing for the last eight years in the youth and family markets and consequently also in ethical and social marketing issues. This goes right to the core of our listeners concerns, be it about the food their children are eating, the ethics behind the clothes they are wearing. Sheena’s commitment to youth and ethical issues is borne of a belief that doing good is good for business, and that young people, whilst they may be stakeholders, consumers and often active participants in modern day business, need to be protected and treated carefully. Sheena believes it’s in both society’s and the business community’s interest to do so.

In the last decade Irelands culinary landscape has changed dramatically as we now boast restaurants that cater to all tastes. Every month we invite a restaurateur to talk us through their menu and shed some light on their cuisine and the ingredients they use. Up to date we have had the following: Flavour of Italy, Chinese Victorian Restaurants, Jaipur Indian Restaurants and Chameleon Indonesia Restaurant.
The latest 2011 Census figures reveal that 199 nationalities reside in Ireland and every week we invite on Global Village a different nationality to share their story with us. It’s a lively, light-hearted and informative interview where the guest talks about their country and culture and we end on playing a song of their choice from their country. The ‘199’ is a weekly feature which airs at the end of the show and celebrates the vibrant and colourful cultures that are shaping our new Ireland!
