Revenue's cash dog, Barney, has been been announced as the winner of the inaugural Golden Paw Hero Dog Award. The springer spaniel is based in Dublin Airport but he is regularly involved in specific projects across the country.

Since joining the 15-strong canine team of Revenue three years ago, the 4-year-old has developed his skills - resulting in significant detections of cash, which seized under the proceeds of crime legislation.

In one particular operation, the search of a premises led to the discovery of €30,000 and two silver bars valued at €10,000 hidden in a wardrobe.

In another instance Barney gave an indication that led to a seizure of €60,000.

Revenue say his sharp scenting skills have helped him to sense something on passenger luggage, clothing and even within passenger's footwear.

All the dogs in Revenue’s Canine Team are trained to be ‘multi-purpose dogs’ and are trained to screen both humans and freight.

They employ a ‘passive response’ - meaning that the dogs are trained to operate using a ‘sit and stare’ approach in the presence of controlled or contraband substances.

Barney participates in national Revenue operations and supports other law enforcement agencies when requested.

Revenue say that Barney’s ‘professional’ life will typically last five to seven years.
