A woman who was earlier jailed after she refused to pay a fine related to home schooling has been released from custody.

Mother of six Monica O'Connor from Tullow in Co Carlow was taken from her home by gardaí this morning.

She and her husband Eddie O'Neill were both found guilty of failing to register two of their children for home-schooling purposes.

They were told by Carlow District Court to pay a fine of €2,000.

That was June of last year, but they have not paid the fine.

However she has now been released from custody. It is unclear whether her husband will now be arrested.

Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan says she is concerned about the news - but says homeschool is necessary in some cases.

Speaking to Newstalk Lunchtime earlier, Ms O'Connor detailed today's events.

While Mr O'Neill told the Right Hook here on Newstalk that he believes most education is actually done in the home - and not the classroom.
