A video journalist working for the Associated Press (AP) has been killed in an explosion in Gaza. Simone Camilli (35) died together with a Palestinian translator and three members of the Gaza police.

The blast happened when police there were making safe unexploded ordnance in the town of Beit Lahiya, left over from the recent fighting.

The AP says Mr Camilli and a translator working with the organisation - Ali Shehda Abu Afash - were accompanying the ordnance team on assignment when the explosion happened.

The police said four other people were seriously injured, including AP photographer Hatem Moussa.

Mr Camilli, an Italian national, had worked for the Associated Press since 2005.

He is the first foreign journalist killed in the conflict, in which more than 1,900 Palestinians and 67 Israelis have died.

Meanwhile Hamas says it will not extend the 72 hour truce in Gaza and will resume fighting after midnight if negotiations in Cairo fail.

Both sides are engaged in direct talks since midnight on Sunday and Hamas wants the military blockade lifted in Gaza.

The talks include indirect negotiations with the Palestinians and are aimed at securing a lasting end to the month-long conflict.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said on Monday that they were ready for "an unconditional, ongoing ceasefire."

Speaking exclusively to Newstalk's Shona Murray in Gaza, senior Hamas spokesperson Ihab al-Ghussein said they will return to the resisatnce if their demands are not met.
