Consultant says Tallaght Hospital emergency department is 'unsafe'

One of the busiest emergency departments in the country is 'practicing third world medicine', according to a consultant. Dr James Gray works in emergency medicine at Tallaght Hospital.

He says the monitors in the department are antiquated and he complains that there are not enough ventilators.

He says the hospital engineers are 'miracle workers', who have to cannibalise parts from dormant machines to keep other equipment working.

Dr Gray says he told a coroners inquest on Moday about the issue of ventilators in the department, as well as the lack of other technical equpment.

Dr Gray told Newstalk Lunchtime the company that makes the monitors do not even make parts for them anymore.
